A Beginner's Guide to Grooming Your Pet at Home

Regular grooming keeps your pet looking great and helps you spot health issues early. Here's how to get started at home:

Brushing Brush your dog or cat at least once a week. Long-haired breeds may need daily brushing. This removes loose fur, prevents matting, and spreads natural oils for a shiny coat.

Bathing Dogs generally need a bath every 4-6 weeks. Use a pet-specific shampoo — human products can irritate their skin. Most cats groom themselves, but occasional baths help with shedding.

Nail Trimming Trim nails every 2-3 weeks. If you can hear clicking on the floor, they're too long. Use proper pet nail clippers and avoid cutting the quick (the pink part inside the nail).

Ear Cleaning Check ears weekly for redness, odour, or wax buildup. Use a vet-approved ear cleaner and a cotton ball — never use cotton buds inside the ear canal.

Dental Care Dental disease is common in pets. Brush their teeth a few times a week with pet toothpaste, or use dental treats and chews as a supplement.

Start Slow If your pet isn't used to grooming, introduce each step gradually with lots of treats and praise.
